The Abolitionist: Rewind Series

The Abolitionist: Rewind Series : Nov 17, Dec 1, Dec 15

Abolitionist organising in the UK is nothing new. Established in 1970, the group Radical Alternatives to Prison published The Abolitionist between 1979 and 1987. The journal brought together work by researchers and activists inside and outside of prison to expose the treatment of prisoners and explore alternate possibilities.

Within The Abolitionist, RAP gave space to other groups that emerged in the 1970s and 1980s and at various times the journal included inserts from PROP - The Prisoners’ Rights Group, Women in Prison and INQUEST.

Now, Abolitionist Futures is making digital copies of The Abolitionist available for the first time on our website.

In a series of events (Nov 17, Dec 1 & Dec 15) we’re inviting activists to reflect on the lessons and the challenges contained in The Abolitionist’s pages. Organisers involved in groups from across the current abolitionist (& aligned) movement will respond to selected articles, picking through inspirational stories and cautionary tales to help us address some of the enduring questions facing abolitionists in the UK today.
